I’m sorry I didn’t get a column in last week; I just ran out of time! Last Tuesday evening, Mama made it back to Madison to the TCU at Morgan Memorial where she is receiving therapy to regain her strength. She had major surgery, so that takes quite a bit out of you. She is doing well, but the therapy really tires her out, so visiting her is on a limited basis, plus she has therapy sessions several times a day.
She greatly appreciates all of your prayers, cards, and phone calls. Many have asked about Daddy; Daddy is doing great, also; he just goes with the flow! Tim returned home on last Wednesday and Bertie had to get back to her school duties on last Monday. They were a lot of help and we greatly appreciated it! We don’t know as of yet how long Mama will be in TCU, but she is getting better every day. She’s ready to go home! Sally and Tony Stephens spent a few days with their son, Josh, in Atlanta, last week, when he underwent kidney surgery at Piedmont Hospital. The surgery went great and he is recovering well at his home there. We all pray that he will continue to fully recover and be able to be back at his job with PAGE in Atlanta.
We all want to extend our deepest sympathy to Judy and Marshall Davis and their family as Judy’s mother, Mrs. Garnette Smith, passed away on February 2nd. Mrs. Smith had made her home with her daughter on Mission Road for several years. She had just turned 83. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of them at this time.
The big news in this area and close to the Fairview community is the long-awaited grand opening of Farmview Market slated for this coming Wednesday, February 17th at 7:00 AM. It sure does look beautiful on the outside as I have passed that way a lot of times these last few weeks. They are going to have a Cafe which will be open from 11:00 AM until 3:00 PM and will be serving locally food-sourced lunches. They will also have a grocery store, a butcher shop, specialty shops, and a gift shop I believe. I have also read that the vendors they will be using will be hosting a demonstration of their wares on Saturday, February 20th.
It will be interesting to see what this new venture will be like and what all it will offer. Some I have talked to don’t even know where it is. You take Hwy 441 south out of Madison and go past the I-20 interchange, past Tractor Supply and it is just a little ways down the road on the left, almost across from the Source of Light Ministries building on the right. It will be worth your while to check it out! I wish them much success!
During the time I missed a week of news, Mrs. Olena Eaton celebrated her 88th birthday! They had a big family fish fry at her house which everyone enjoyed. Happy Birthday Olena!! And many, many more! The little Bruce twins down the road also celebrated their birthday’s while I was AWOL……Rylee and Harper turned 4 years old. They had a big birthday party with family and friends. They are really growing up; they were lucky enough to win the PreK Lottery, so they will be going to PreK at Morgan County Primary School next year.
Another item of congratulations is the birth of little Waylon to Chelsea Davis and Johnathan Rose. The little boy was born last week on February 8th. He is a healthy little boy. The maternal grandparents are Tina and Matt Knight of Madison and Brad and Shannon Davis of Social Circle. Sandra Brown is the maternal great-grandmother and Mrs. Harriette Wade is the great-great-grandmother. A big congratulations go out to everyone! We want to welcome Joey and Beth Cathey with their children, Maddie and Sam to the Bethany community. They have moved into the house that Joey grew up in on the Bethany Road. Welcome! We also want to congratulate Thrasher Wilkins who won his matches and came away with GOLD at a big competition this past weekend in Long Beach, California! Thrasher, who is 9 years old, participated in a big Jiu-Jitsu competition, called the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation Competition. Thrasher is sponsored by the Hard Core Gym in Athens where he takes classes and is trained. They have and are doing a great job. This was Thrasher’s 2nd trip to the West Coast. He competed in his first competition in Las Vegas last year. Thrasher is the son of Luke and Emily Wilkins and the grandson of Ernie and Theresa Thrasher of Buckhead, Harriette Young and Charles and Anne Young of Madison.
Congratulations, Thrasher! Good job! Ernie thrasher, Thrasher’s grandfather, also told me that he was stationed at Long Beach for 6 months when he joined the Navy. They later shipped him to Viet Nam. Karalynn Clifton and Maggie Harper participated in a swim meet at Georgia Tech this past weekend. They both did very well. Karalynn made it to the finals. She swam against a 2012 Olympian and 2016 Olympic qualifier, 29 year old Amanda Weir. That is quite impressive and what a great experience for her. Raegan Wilkins participated in a gymnastic meet on this past Saturday at the Classic Center in Athens and she came away with 1st place in the floor exercise!
Congratulations, Raegan! Well done! Connie and Paul Shumake’s grandson, Bryson Burke, made the high school baseball team and they have begun their season. Connie with her granddaughter’s braved the cold weather on Friday evening for his high school scrimmage game. Christie Burke and Colleen Shumake spent Thursday through Sunday at Delray Beach, Florida where they visited the Charlemange Gibbon’s family. They also attended two basketball games of Florida Atlantic University where Charlemange is the coach. Christie’s 4 children were guests of their grandparents while they were gone. Connie is a busy grandmother! Dan and Sally Porter traveled down to Perry this past Saturday, where they watched their grandson, Jake Carver, show his pig, Diesel in the Houston County FFA pig show. Jake and Diesel received 2nd place!
Congratulations, Jake! Mary also got to show Diesel; all the children received a trophy. Mary is getting the “show bug” it seems; she wants her own pig next year so she can join in on the action! The state show is this coming weekend in Perry! On Saturday, Chuck and Janice Philippi along with Rebekah Kilpatrick and Grayson and Jenna Philippi and Cooper attended the Ringling Brothers Circus in Atlanta. The boys had a grand time! Tommy and Raynor Cathey, Dale Massey and Cheri Roberts, along with Gene and Karen Massey have just returned from a wonderful trip to Boston, Massachusetts and to Iceland. They saw some beautiful sights and you guessed it; lots and lots of ice!! Karen and Jack Lindsey have also just returned from a nice and relaxing trip to Jamaica, where it was delightfully warm! Katelyn Messer and her fiance’, Dustin Mines, have been honored at wedding showers recently given by family and friends. The first shower was given on February 6th by Penny Messer, April Bone, Heather Gardner, Sylvia Moon, Denise Peters, and Chelsea Bell and was held at the Bethany Baptist Church Fellowship Hall.
This was for the Bone and Messer families. The shower that was held at Centerpointe Church was given by Dusty’s mom, Lisa Johnson, his sister, Ashley Mines, and his cousin, Karen Young. Katelyn and Dusty received many beautiful and useful gifts for their future home at all these showers. They are planning a March wedding; they don’t have long!
