There was plenty of special recognition at the monthly Board of Education meeting this week, including the appreciation for Morgan County’s five Board of Education members as it is their appreciation week, as well as recognition of Morgan County High School’s wrestling and basketball teams on their successes during their seasons. “We can’t thank you enough,” Head Wrestling Coach, John Robbins says to the board members. “As a teacher, an educator, and a coach in this county and program, and as a resident.” The other coaches for wrestling, girl’s and boy’s basketball all expressed their gratitude for the board members, as well as their thankfulness for their assistant coaches and all of their athletes. As each coach stood up to talk, they also introduced each of their athletes and ensured to display how proud they are of each and them and all their achievements. The coaches showed that all of their players stick out in their own way and make the team as a whole even better.

After the recognitions, Superintendent for Student Support and Community Relations, Sarah Burbach, announced the total current enrollment of students to be at 3,163 in all county schools. Parents are also now able to enroll their children online at schools to make it more convenient for them. Lavonne Doty and Bobby Zimmerman discussed the ease of this new process and census verification can be updated online by parents as well. “Everyone loves it,” Doty says in reference to these new online processes. “The feedback has been phenomenal.” Another great initiative being taken is to get parents and children more informed on asthma, especially with the rise of pollen count. Nurses at the schools have found that parents have many questions and misinformation about treating asthma, so a speaker from Children’s Hospital will be coming to a PTO Parent Night to discuss it further. The meeting will take place March 29 at Morgan County Elementary School. As far as finances go for the school system, Chief Financial Officer, Libby Whitaker, ensures that total revenues and expenditures are average for this time of year.
