An Eatonton man was arrested on methamphetamine charges after deputies with the Morgan County Sheriff’s Office allegedly located methamphetamine in the man’s pocket. John Walton Cartey 59, was arrested early Monday morning, March 21 after a traffic stop near the intersection of Parks Mill Road and Oconee Road in Buckhead. According to reports, Deputy Andrew Cason stopped a 2013 Chevrolet Captiva Cartey was driving for failing to maintain lane. Consequent to the stop, reports state, Cartey gave the deputy permission to search his vehicle but stated “you can’t go in my pockets.” Two more deputies arrived and requested that Cartey empty his pockets and, reports state, a deputy allegedly observed Cartey take something from a front pocket and move it to a rear pocket. The deputy allegedly retrieved a small plastic bag containing suspected methamphetamine from Cartey’s rear pocket. Cartey alleged told the deputies that someone else had placed the plastic bag in his pocket. He was charged with possession of methamphetamine and failure to maintain lane. His vehicle was towed. A female passenger with him was given a courtesy ride to the Putnam County line where Putnam County Sheriff’s Office deputies picked her up and gave her a ride home. The incident occurred between 11 p.m. on March 20 and 12:25 a.m. on March 21.
