Madison Police Department investigators and Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) agents continue to question persons surrounding the events that led to a fatal shooting last week on East Jefferson Street.

Antonio Smith, 26, was shot and killed outside a single wide manufactured home sometime between 10 p.m. and 11 p.m. on Monday, April 25. Smith died at Morgan Memorial Hospital, Special Agent Ryan Carmichael said last week.

According to Wes Thompson, detective, Madison Police Department, Smith was shot once in the left side. No weapon has been recovered. Thompson said ‘multiple shots’ were fired.

Madison Police Chief Bill Ashburn said investigators have contacted and interviewed more than 15 people in regards to the fatal shooting.

“There are a lot of pieces to put together,” he said.

Smith’s body was transported to the GBI crime lab in Atlanta for an autopsy. Ashburn said investigators hope to recover a bullet from the autopsy that they can use to help determine what type of weapon was used. A bullet has been recovered from a trailer near the shooting site.

A neighbor in the area said he heard five or six shots the night of the shooting and then there were “people running everywhere.”
