The Morgan County boys’ and girls’ tennis teams represented themselves admirably in the AAA state tournament.  The boys fell to Cedartown in the first round while the girls defeated Rockmart to make the Sweet 16.  Blessed Trinity proved to be too much for the girls in the second round and that’s where their season ended.

Coach Greg Thompson discussed the Dogs first, “Cedartown was a tough opponent for us. We had a chance at them but just didn’t get it done. I thought our kids gave it everything they had, but it was just a tough day for us. We had a long ride and were out of school that day for Spring Break, and I think anytime you take kids out of their regular routine that they are normally comfortable with, it has an effect. I am very proud of these boys and the season we had. Coming into the season, I knew we had some gaps to fill from who we lost last year, and I had some guys really step up.  I couldn’t be prouder of how they all performed. We will certainly miss our three singles players, Matt Callaway, Will Spates and Simon Newton as they go off to college. We have to find a way to fill that void next year, but I am certain that just like in years past, our kids will step up and I expect great things again next year.”

Here are the results for the boys in the first round

Boys vs. Cedartown Lost 1-4

1 Singles Matt Callaway lost 6-4, 6-0

2 Singles Will Spates lost 3-6, 4-6

3 Singles Simon Newton won 6-3, 7-6

1 Doubles Will Owen and Noah Harris lost 5-6, 5-7

2 Doubles John Cardwell and Sam Jones lost 5-7, 6-3, 1-6

Morgan’s girls got by Rockmart 4-1 in the first round and lost 5-0 to a very talented Blessed Trinity squad.  Thompson talked about the two matches saying, “These girls worked hard all year and I am so proud of all of them. We have a very talented team and I feel comfortable putting any of them on the court against anyone. We got past Rockmart pretty easy with good performances all the way down the line. I wasn’t sure what to expect coming into that match, but felt good about it from the information that I had gotten from other coaches who had played them. The second round was certainly a different story. We played well at all lines, but were just simply overmatched. Blessed Trinity has won seven state tennis championships in a row, and I certainly expect to see them in the final four competing for another one. They were just so solid and our girls had a hard time competing. We have a really good tennis team, but when you travel to Roswell, Georgia and watch those girls play, it is a different level of tennis that we don’t see very often. Oconee County girls won our region and they were put out 3-0 by Westminster who finished behind Blessed Trinity in that region if that tells you anything. Regardless of the outcome in the sweet sixteen round, I am still very proud of these girls and what they accomplished this season. They are the most fun bunch of girls to be around and they are all truly friends with each other and those friendships will last them a lifetime way past high school tennis. Sometimes you have to put things into perspective and understand that there is more to High School sports than winning championships. The friendships you have, and the memories you make as a team will go farther than any trophy you may bring home. With that said, I do expect this group to win the region championship next year and go deep in the state playoffs. All of our girls will be returning next year with Chloe Cooper, Carley Henry and Jessie Pagett being our only seniors on the team. We have seven girls who will be juniors, two sophomores, and several girls who will be freshmen next year.  The future is certainly bright for many years for the Morgan County Tennis team.
