Head boys’ and girls’ tennis coach Greg Thompson was named Co-Head Coach-of-the year after an outstanding season in 8-AAA competition.  He has served as the tennis coach for both programs for the past four seasons and is the principal at Crossroads Alternative School in the Morgan County School System.

He talked about the award, “Getting enough votes to be named as co-region coach of the year just means we had some really good talent on our girls’ tennis team. Without the wins we had and our performance in the region tournament, I doubt any of the other coaches would have considered me. I have very little to do with how well our girls perform week after week. They are a very talented group of girls and I just try to get them to perform at the level I know they are capable of. I am just honored to have had the opportunity to coach them. You certainly won’t find a better group of young ladies to work with and to be around every day. I think Derek Hon and Dan Grueter from Oconee have won the region in both girls and boys each year with the exception of one year that we were in the same region with North Oconee. They are both exceptional tennis coaches and have built that program into one of the best in the state year after year. I am just honored to have gotten enough votes to share the region coach-of-the-year award with Derek.”

Both squads had a number of region award winners as well.  The girls finished runner-up to Oconee and the boys came into the state tournament as a number three seed.  Here are the results for Morgan’s teams in the region voting

Thompson commented on the player awards saying, “I am very proud of these kids and what they accomplished this year. This is the most players that we have had recognized in some way in the four years I have been coaching tennis. Being recognized by other coaches in the region for your play, and making the all-region team, or even honorable mention is a great honor for these athletes. We have a very competitive region with a lot of talented players and all of these kids should be very proud. I know I am.”
