The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) will be hosting a public information open house to go over proposed plans of widening US 441 from two to four lanes in Morgan and Putnam Counties.

The project will require a transportation investment of over $79 million dollars and will cover nearly 18 miles of highway.

The proposed Morgan County stretch of US 441 will run from the Putnam County line to north of Pierce Dairy Road.

The Putnam County section picks up from the county boundary through to Sherwood Avenue just north of Eatonton.

GDOT District Planning and Program Coordinator Cissy McNure advised that the projected start dates for the project are September of 2018 for the Morgan County portion and August of 2019 for the Putnam County portion.

“On September 15, 2018 we will release the contract to bid. It won’t be until early 2019 that the Morgan county leg will see work being done,” said GDOT District Communications Officer Kyle Collins.

GDOT currently projects it will take approximately 36 months in order to widen the 18-mile stretch of road.

“We’re still in the pre-construction phase so we want to encourage people to come out and comment on the project. I encourage anyone who feels they may be impacted either positively or negatively to come talk to us,” said Collins.

The public is encouraged to attend the open house in order to voice their opinions, view project displays and ask questions. The meeting will be informal with no presentation.

“There will be right of way representatives at the meeting to talk to property owners,” said McNure.

The open house will be held at Putnam County High School on Thursday, August 4 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Project displays will also be available online and at the Georgia DOT Madison Office, 1570 Bethany Road for a 10 day public comment period.

Written statements will be accepted concerning the project until Thursday, August 18 and can be submitted to Eric Duff, State Environmental Administrator. Georgia Department of Transportation. 600 West Peachtree Street, NW – 16th Floor, Atlanta, Georgia 30308.
