Florine (Kitty) Gibbs

Florine (Kitty) Grant Gibbs was born April 28, 1916 to the late Lee Grant and the late Mary Daniel Grant.  She married Raymon (Pinky) Gibbs in 1930/ They were married for 50 years and they had 10 children. She was preceded in death by a daughter Flora Bell Gibbs, two sons Raymond (Jack) Gibbs and Lenwood (Boot) Gibbs; two children died at childbirth; three sisters Josephine Grant Maxey, Cleo Grant Bishop and Lucy Mae Grimes, four brothers Lee Grant Jr., Ulyssee S. Grant, Thomas Clayton Grant and Lenwood (Manboy) Grant.

Mrs. Gibbs was a self-taught seamstress.  For the past several years she resided at Madison Health and Rehab Center. She enjoyed her roommate Ella Mae Lackey.

She died Tuesday, July 19 at the age of 100. She leaves to cherish her memory three daughters Helen (Sue) Gibbs, Annie Kate Gibbs and Susie Ann Peters; two sons Willie Frank (Toot) Gibbs and Harry (BoCat) Gibbs, all of Madison; one niece Clara Maxey of Atlanta, one nephew Charlie Bishop of Madison and a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren.

Funeral service was held for Mrs. Gibbs Saturday, July 23 at 2 p.m. in Clarke Chapel Baptist Church. Interment was in Fairview City Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Deacon Tony Gibbs, Deacon Charlie Mathis Jr., Rocky Cooper, Dwayne Gibbs, Terrence Howell and Kenontae Towler. Flower Girls were Tasha Gibbs, Evonda Gibbs, Artrose Cooper, Jenice Gibbs, Tiffany Gibbs and Latoshia Thomas.

Jones and Turner Funeral Home were in charge of arrangements.

Roy Lamar Durrance

Roy Lamar Durrance, 59 of Madison, died July 23, 2016.  He was a native of Daytona Beach, Fla. Roy was born December 19, 1957 to Herman and Nancy White Durrance.  He worked as a lineman.  Roy was married to his wife of 31 years, Ann Bingham Durrance.  He was a member of Fusion Church Madison.  He was an avid outdoorsman. He especially enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Roy Durrance is survived by his wife, Ann and two children, Kelly Sue Durrance and Michael Roy Durrance.  Mr. Durrance has three grandchildren, Chloe Lynn Durrance, Landon Michael Durrance and Kelsey Marie Riddle.  He also leaves a great grandson, Jackson Tyler Riddle as well as a host of brothers and sisters.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, July 30 at 11 a.m. at Fusion Church.  The memorial service will be held at Noon.

Leonard James Slote

Leonard James Slote, 63, of Madison, died July 23, 2016.  Mr. Slote was born November 29, 1952 to Murray and Betty R. Slote in Toronto, Canada.  He received a bachelor’s degree and has worked as Greene County GIS Coordinator for the past 11 years.   Mr. Slote was engaged to be married to Mia Dulinawka.  He was involved with the Morgan County Riders and the Winter Bike League in Athens.  Mr. Slote loved his family and cycling, and competed and placed in many cycling events.  His offbeat sense of humor won him many friends.

Mr. Slote is survived by his children, Kevin Slote (Kayla Edgett), Derek Slote (Michelle) and Sarah Slote.  He leaves one grandson, James Slote.  He also leaves his step mother, Rita Slote and  two siblings, Murray Slote (Diane) and Allison Laing.  Mr. Slote was preceded in death by his first wife, Ellen Louise Slote; his parents, Murray Slote and Betty Richardson Unger (Karl); siblings, Louise Samms and Wayne Laing. 

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 30 at 10 AM in the chapel of A.E. Carter Funeral Home.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Athens Wild Rumpus at
