Let’s get caught up on some cross-country news by recapping the first two meets of the season. In the opener at Loganville Christian Academy the team was outstanding with the boys taking first place honors overall and the girls finishing a strong second. Dalton Shaw and Alex Roundtree both finished in the top ten to lead the Dogs. Anna Hart, Jessie Paget, and Carolina Zant all also finished in the top ten as frontrunners for Morgan’s Lady Dogs.
Head Coach Erin Spinks said, “We worked hard to be ready for our first race. Our runners practiced starting the race, passing through the middle, and turning up the sprint at the end. I felt like we were very prepared as we journeyed to our meet early Saturday morning. This team did not disappoint! They were pumped up and ready. I had chills as I watched them warm up, stretch, and line up for the race! I am so very proud of their hard work, dedication, and push to be their very best! They are truly living out the life verse from Proverbs 27:17 “iron sharpens iron”. They encourage each other and cheer each other on! It is truly a blessing to me to get to coach these runners!”
In the second meet of the season against much tougher competition, the teams traveled to North Oconee High School. Both the varsity and JV teams competed. The varsity boys and girls came in seventh place while the JV boys took sixth. Shaw again led the boys with a time of 18:29 while Roundtree finished at 18:48 with both runners again finishing in the top ten overall. Nathan Hicks (21.25) and Austin Cheynet (21.40) also placed in the top ten for the boys’ JV squad.
Spinks again commented on the outcome saying, “This meet was a challenge for our runners, but I’m very pleased at how well they did at this point in the season. Our team is strong and they are wonderful encouragers to each other. Many improved their times! We are working hard each week to set reachable goals and train hard. I’m super proud of this entire team!”
The first home meet of the season will be Wednesday, September seventh. The meet starts at 4:30 for our middle school runners and there is a $5 parking fee for fans. After the first meet there will be a short awards ceremony before the varsity teams crank up at 6:00. The ever-spirited Spinks wanted to say, “Thanks for making our team the best!”
