If you think that 8-AAA softball isn’t tough, you haven’t looked at the state standings lately. Morgan faced the number three and four teams in the state last week and came away with two big region wins. Tuesday, they beat Franklin 2-0 at home and then came from behind to defeat East Jackson 4-3 Thursday on the road. Franklin is currently ranked number three and East Jackson is number four in those standings.
Thursday the Lady Diamond Dogs came from behind to defeat the number four ranked East Jackson squad 4-3. The winning pitcher was Ansley Dean who pitched a complete game giving up eight hits and three earned runs while recording five strikeouts and no walks. Leading the offense were Sarah Couch with two walks and three stolen bases. Alisha Ellis had a hit and Liz Couch added a double and one run scored. Sydney Walker went 1-3 on the day with an RBI single. Pitcher Dean was active at the plate going 1-2 and scoring two runs. It was Madison Henry who had the big hit of the game and Mary Trent Chandler had a nine pitch at bat that ended with a two RBI double to right field with two outs in the sixth inning.
Coach Jason McBay said, “Not every day do you see results from something you have specifically worked on in practice… but Mary Trent’s hit to right field reminded me so much of a drill we work on in practice. Such a clutch hit. I am so proud of all of our girls for the desire to never give up and fight for everything. Our biggest challenge now is to hold ourselves to a high level of play. We must push ourselves every day in practice so that we are prepared for anything that could happen down the stretch.”
