Here’s a rundown of the Region 8-AAA awards for the MCHS girls’ volleyball team after the best season in the history of the program. They captured the first-ever Area Title in school history and made it to the Sweet 16 of the state playoffs. It was a season to remember. If Bulldog fans would come out and watch these girls and this sport, they would see some of the finest athletes competing at the highest level. It’s fun to watch and there’s nonstop action throughout the match.
8AAA All-Area Teams and Honorable mention
8-AAA Player of the Year-
Mary Zimmerman (Morgan County)
Zimmerman said this about the award, “I feel incredibly honored. That was a great surprise and I hope that I have truly earned it. I give it 110% and I want to thank you for taking the time to recognize that. Sports are my life and I would be lost without them. Thank you to all my coaches and teammates for being by my side and helping me through it all. When asked if she was being recruited at the college level she commented, “Yes somewhat, I definitely plan on playing college ball. Don’t think I could live without it.”
Coach Greg Thomson talked about the season, “This is a great honor for all of our players. They were nominated and voted on by the other coaches in the area which means that they stood out to the other coaches who we competed against. I thought we had a couple of other girls who could have been recognized, but I only get one vote. Overall I was happy with how things came out. We have a lot of talented players in this area and all of our girls were very deserving of this recognition.
Mary being named the 8AAA player of the year is a great achievement for her. I think this says a lot about our program and the talent that we have year after year. Regardless of the individual honors, our team as a group deserves the highest recognition. There are players on our team that may not have been recognized, but without them, we certainly wouldn’t have been able to accomplish what we did this season. We were truly a team of 12 hardworking girls who all had the same goals to start the season, and they worked hard every day as a group to accomplish them. They pushed each other every day to get better and without all 12 girls working together, we would be just another average volleyball team.”
