After winning two of the past three state championships including the 2015-16 title, Morgan County’s Bulldogs will surely have a target on their backs every time they hit the floor.  Head Coach Jamond Sims is certainly aware of that fact and the veteran mentor will have his hands full if his Bulldogs are to repeat last season’s performance.  Morgan posted a 26-4 record last season and are set to open their 2016-17 campaign at home against Class 4A Jefferson on November 29th.  The Dogs visited Class 5A Warner Robins last week for a scrimmage and came home with a 62-62 tie versus the Demons which bodes well for the future.

According to Sims the biggest roadblock within Morgan’s region (8AAA) looks to be Monroe Area.  The Purple Hurricanes have perhaps the most talented roster that the Dogs will face on their region schedule.  Outside that Class AAA is loaded with big-time teams.  In an odd twist of reclassification there are actually three returning state champs inside Class AAA this year.  Pace Academy, led by nationally recruited Wendell Carter are the defending AA champs from last year and have moved up to AAA.  Liberty County, led by national recruit Richard LeCounte were the Class AAAA champions last year and moved down into AAA.  Of course Morgan County makes three.

The Bulldogs occupy the fifth spot in pre-season ranking (according to the Score Atlanta poll) behind Pace Academy, Westside Macon, Liberty County and Jenkins of Savannah.  The rest of the top 10 are Cedar Grove, Greater Atlanta Christian, Lovett, Islands (Savannah) and Crisp County.  Of course pre-season rankings are fickle so we’ll just have to see how things pan out.

Morgan County’s squad will be led by Alec Woodard, Jermaine Alexander and Quin Williams but the Bulldogs are pretty deep and will most likely rotate nine or 10 players in every game.  Sims thinks that the depth of his team along with their experience and overall speed will be their strong point and it should be an exciting season for the Bulldogs.
