The MCHS wrestling team put in a full day of work in Cumming Georgia on Wednesday November 23rd as they participated in their first event of the season. The meet was held on the campus of West Forsyth High School and Morgan County posted four wins and one defeat in the duals style tournament. The Bulldogs trounced the home team West Forsyth Wolverines 56-21 and then pummeled Pepperell’s Dragons 66-18 in early rounds. They then crushed the Creekview (Canton) Grizzlies 55-21 and the Ridgeland (Rossville) Panthers 42-33 to advance to the finals. In the tournament finals Morgan faced off against the South Forsyth (Cumming) War Eagles and came up short by a final tally of 35-31.
Morgan was pitted against upper classification squads in four of their five matches. West Forsyth and South Forsyth both compete in Class 7A, Creekview is in Class 6A and Ridgeland High is a Class 4A school. Only Pepperell competes in a lower classification as the Dragons are a Class 2A school.
Coach John Robbins wasn’t particularly pleased with the outcome and noted, “Sometimes the best team doesn’t win. The sting of losing a tournament like this in the finals sticks with you and hopefully we won’t allow ourselves to get in that position again. In order for our team to accomplish what we are capable of, all our guys have to expect to win and continue to develop that mentality across the lineup will be a primary focus moving forward.”
Clearly the bar is set high for this team.
There were several outstanding individual efforts on the day.
-In the 195 pound weight class Ladarrius Andrews went 5-0 with four first period falls.
-In the 145 pound weight class Jody McAlister posted a 5-0 record and recorded two falls.
– In the 170 pound weight class Sean McElligott went 4-1 with 3 falls.
-In the 152 pound weight class Antonio Robinson went 4-1 with 3 falls.
-In the 138 pound weight class Kevin Berisko posted a 4-1 record including 3 falls.
-In the 182 pound weight class Haydan Snowden wrestled up a weight class and posted two big wins for the team.
The Bulldogs resumed their season November 30th as the Morgan County Middle School, JV and varsity teams all traveled to Madison County. They took on Madison County, Oglethorpe County and defending state champion Jefferson. Those results will be reported next week.
The Morgan County Middle School team will travel to Ola High School on Saturday, December 3rd to participate in the Ola Pin Down Cancer Invitational in McDonough, Georgia. That same day the MCHS JV squad will face off against Walnut Grove in the Warrior Rumble and the Morgan County varsity team will travel to Kennesaw, Georgia to participate in the Hoya Invitational at Harrison High School.
