Thrifty Mac Pharmacy is celebrating 40 years of business in downtown Madison this year. George Lainus started out as a pharmacist in Monroe, Georgia, who was sent to Madison to work at Thrifty Mac, then owned by a company in Monroe. Lainus purchased Thrifty Mac a year later, after falling in love with the local community.
“It’s a small town a wonderful small town where people really take care of each other and is still close to the major cities, i think it’s the perfect place to live,” said George.
George, and his wife Nancy, who manages the store, have served thousands of patrons and filled over 1 million prescriptions over the course of the last four decades.
“We are proud of it,” said George. “Our motto is to give our patients great service and try to have fun while we are doing it. We have a dedicated staff and loyal patients. If you have a smile on your face and you are having fun while you get the job done, people will keep coming back.”
Thrifty Mac not only fills prescriptions, but offers vaccine shots, and an array of home medical equipment and supplies. The store has launched a new medication syncronization program, called “Simplify My Meds,” which coordinates patients’ monthly meds so that
all their prescriptions are automatically filled on the same day each month.
“It saves people trips to the store and ensures they never run out of medicine,” said George.
George hopes Thrifty Mac will continue to be a popular store in downtown Madison for many generations to come, believing patients prefer smaller, family-owned pharmacies.
Pharmacy. No charge for this service.
“We would want people to know how hard we try to give superior service. Our staff really cares. When you come to our store, we call you by your name and you get waited on immediately. It’s superior to what you get when you go to the big chains in that way,” said George. “The big stores are more concerned about reducing staff to a minimum level to maximize their profits, but we are more concerned with having a maximized staff to give maximized service.”
George is staying on the cutting edge of technology, even debuting an App for Thrifty Mac in a few weeks.
“We want to be the best at what we do. We are thriving in America. We can give such good service while our prices are the same or better than the big stores. If you stay on the cutting edge you can do well.”
George and Nancy are glad to have taken on a business in Madison that the entire community can be proud is here.
“This place has a real community. We have found such incredible support for both our business and our family. It’s been a wonderful place to live in and work in. We wouldn’t want to do it anywhere else.”
