The hardcourt Dogs traveled to Greenville, South Carolina over the weekend to face off with the Red Raiders of Greenville High School. The host team is undefeated at 6-0 after the win over Morgan going into their region schedule. In other words Greenville is no pancake opponent from Class AAAA. They presented a tough matchup for the now 2-2 Bulldogs
Morgan led after the first quarter 12-10. Tyrin Lawrence and Alec Woodard scored all the points for the Dogs as both hit a three along with a bucket. Lawrence added two free throws into the mix for his seven points and Woodard had five. Greenville showed one of their strengths in the first by hitting two threes of their own. They would go on to hit 10 tres in the contest.
The second period was Morgan’s undoing as they could only get on the board for six points while the Red Raiders poured in 17 of their own to take a 27-18 nine point lead into the locker room. Greenville hit three more from outside the circle and also began to show a strong inside presence in the paint that accounted for a 5-8 free throw performance.
Morgan outscored Greenville 38-37 in the second half, but could not dig out of the hole they had at the half. The Bulldogs fell behind 45-33 at the end of the third quarter as the home team hit four more three pointers.
Woodard got heated up in the final period and tallied 14 points of the team’s 23 in an effort to bring the Dogs back. His two threes and six of seven from the charity stripe just weren’t enough to stave off their opponents. Greenville went 15-20 at the line to seal the deal taking a 64-56 win.
Next up for the Dogs will be an away game this Friday at West Hall starting at 7:00 pm.
