Let’s take a poll. Who is the best centerfielder in the state? Morgan County fans would all respond with a resounding, “Sarah Couch, our centerfielder!” After all, you are looking at a player who committed only one error over an entire season that offered her dozens of opportunities and chances in the field to commit many more. Not only that, she led the team in batting average and stolen bases. Not a bad season. Georgia College and State University signed a premier player, but also a premier person and student (4.0 GPA and fifth in her class).
The following are quotes from Sarah about her new home for 2017-18.
“The Bobcats were10th among all Division II programs with a 3.563 overall team grade-point average (GPA). The team finished with a 41-18 overall record en route to their fourth-straight NCAA Southeast Regional appearance. The team is coached by Jamie Grodecki.” Grodecki has taken the program to new heights since arriving there seven years ago. She has taken a losing program and put them right in the middle of competing for championships in the Peach Belt Conference and on the national stage.
Sarah continued with these remarks, “The school overall drew my attention because it felt like home and Madison. I liked the girls as they were very welcoming.” She plans on majoring in something that is science related like biology or chemistry. “Their facilities are really nice and the field is great (which is something she’s used to coming from one of the premier programs in the state). I wanted to be close to home so my family could come see me play ball.”
She told us that workouts begin in the early summer and the season schedule cranks up in the spring, not in the fall like high schools do.
The senior finished up with this, “I want to maintain good grades as well as contribute to the team’s success. My hope is to convince my sister Liz to go there with me where we can be roommates.” She had a lot of people to thank saying, “Thanks to Coach Dooley for giving me the opportunity to play at the next level. He really helped me with the recruiting process. Also, a big thanks to all of my coaches for helping me get the recognition to play at the next level. I am very thankful to have this exciting opportunity.”
Many things have been said and written about this young lady concerning her character, playing ability, and work ethic. One thing all of those who know her and had an opportunity to watch her roam the outfield will tell you. “She’s a WINNER.”
