Head wrestling coach, John Robbins, and his team continued their success on the mat this past week with a win over Monroe area on senior night 48-21.  Robbins said, “It was a great night to honor our seniors (Student Assistant Annie Akins, Jody McAlister, Antonio Robinson, Sean McElligott, Ladarrius Andrews, Michael Rhodes, & Robert Gibbs).

Over the weekend Morgan’s JV competed in the JV War Eagle Classic at Woodward Academy with eight wrestlers entered into the match.  All eight were medalists and five were champions (Garner Drummond, Hayden Snowden, Zach Smith, Hayden Snowden, & Trevor Craft, and three placers- Hunter Morris, Tyler Armistead, & Matthew Bailey).

Kevin Berisko: 22-1

Antonio Robinson 21-1

Robbins commented, “Our wrestlers did a great job this weekend. The War Eagle Classic is one of the oldest and most prestigious tournaments in our state, so I couldn’t be more proud of our kids. Everyone on the team helped get us the team championship. The middle weights were dominant again, but the biggest boost came from our heavyweights, as Finn Williams, LA Andrews, Michael Rhodes, & Robert Gibbs all came through with huge performances.”

Next Up: Tuesday, December 20 at Woodland (#1 ranked team in 5A), followed by the Coastal Clash in Charleston SC December 22 and 23.

News and notes:

The Dogs moved to 5-1 overall in dual meet competition with a 55-18 win over Riverside Military Academy on December 3.

Following that, the dogs hosted a 14 team field for the MC Christmas Classic on December 9/10. The team finished in second just behind defending AA state champions Social Circle. Morgan had 13 medalists, which included three tournament champions. At 145- Jody McAlister grabbed a first place finish and was voted tournament Outstanding Wrestler by all the coaches.

Robbins talked about his team saying, “A lot of our guys, both young and old, are really starting to wrestle well. Unfortunately we still have some of our best guys stacked up together, but their weights will start to separate more as the season continues. Of the 13 medalists, who all had standout performances, the three champions really stood out, as they truly dominated their opponents up to and through their finals match.  Berisko and Robinson both claimed their second tournament title of this young season, and McAlister (who was out last weekend) won in such a dominant fashion he was voted Outstanding Wrestler by the coaches. We haven’t had a home town champion at the Classic in several years, so winning three at once was certainly special.”
