The Lady Dogs are on a roll! With two wins in the books this week they have rolled off five straight and now own an 8-3 record on the season. This past week the girls defeated East Jackson 48-17 and Putnam County 37-26.
At home against East Jackson the game was tight up until halftime. Tamia Benford came out of the gate scoring the first seven of the contest as Morgan romped out to a 15-4 lead. However, East Jackson made a comeback scoring the first six points of the second quarter and the Lady Dogs were only up 17-10 at the break.
The full court press created havoc for Morgan after the break going on a 13-0 run to seal the deal. MOCO led by 20, 32-12, going into the final period. The lead continued to balloon in the fourth for the final of 48-17. Morgan was led by Tamia Benford with 19 and Kourtney Elder with nine.
On Saturday the JV girls traveled to hostile territory at Putnam County and grabbed another “W” as they won 37-26. Benford again scored 17 and Taylor Wilson added seven to help Morgan beat the Lady Eagles in a physical rivalry game.
Coach Brett Bell said, “I’m very proud of the way the players competed in both games and hope we continue to develop fundamentally at practice. We need to finish the season strong and help our varsity along the way.”
The boys’ squad also took a nice win over East Jackson in a low scoring affair 37-29. East Jackson kept it close in the first quarter by nailing two from long distance. Morgan led 14-8 after one quarter of play but the Eagles kept it close at the half 19-14.
East Jackson came out swinging after intermission as they hit on two straight three-pointers to take the slight edge 20-19 with 5:40 remaining. The Dogs scored six to end the quarter and led 25-20 going into the finishing quarter. The home town boys closed it out with a 12-9 ending to a good game.
The Dogs lost to Putnam County on Saturday night at the War Eagle’s Nest.
