With two region wins to end the regular season against Jackson County and Monroe Area, the girls grabbed a valuable third place finish. These wins allowed Morgan to host the first round of the Region Tournament and give them home-court advantage as they face off with number six seed East Jackson. The Lady Eagles are 1-9 in the region and 11-14 overall while the Lady Dogs enter the tournament at 7-3 and 12-12.
Tournament action began on Tuesday with Morgan playing at home. Should the girls win that game, they will earn the right to play number two seed Hart County in the semifinals. A win against East Jackson would also assure the team of a place in the AAA State Tournament. The stakes are high.
This past week MOCO defeated Jackson County 47-30 and Monroe Area 37-25. According to Coach Josh Reeves, “We played some solid basketball against two very improved teams. We were up by ten against Jackson at the half and hung on after that. We had a very sluggish start against Monroe before Tot (Tatyana Davis) and Autumn (Woodard) picked us up against their stingy 2-3 zone. It’s going to give us a big advantage to be the home team in the first round. It’s a big game for our team.”
The JV girls lost in the championship game of their rendition of the Region Tournament. After defeating East Jackson 50-13 in the semifinals, the Lady Dogs fell to Franklin County in a heart-breaker 43-41 in the championship game. They finished the season with a respectable 9-4 overall record.
Leading scorers for the tournament were Tamia Benford, Kourtney Elder, Arkisha Williams, and Tamia Benford.
