The Madison Mayor and City Council is mulling over pay raises for council members.

At last Friday’s work session, Councilman Joe DiLetto proposed raising council member salaries to $650 month, up from the current $450 per month.

“Maybe if there is more pay, we can will get more people interested in running,

said DiLetto.

“People don’t realize how intense this job has become,” said Councilwoman Chris Hodges.

“We are putting in more hours than ever at meetings and events. People expect a lot from their representatives today, so a little more pay might be necessary.”

“And the amount we are talking about here isn’t that much, it wouldn’t hurt us, budget-wise,” added Hodges.

According to city officials, council member salaries have not been raised in over 15 years.

Before the council makes a decision, city staff has been charged with the task of looking into the pay scales of council members from surrounding and similar cities. Councilman Rick Blanton suggested reviewing their findings before making a decision.

“We will have to look at this in the coming months,” said Madison Mayor Fred Perriman.
