Sara Tate Herndon
Sara Tate Herndon, 89 of Madison, died February 26, 2017 after an extended illness. Mrs. Herndon was born October 18, 1927 in High Shoals to L.G. and Glenn Shellnut Tate. She graduated as Valedictorian of her class at Social Circle High School. Mrs. Herndon was a talented basketball player, holding the high scoring record at Social Circle for many years. After high school, she obtained a degree in biology from Georgia State College for Women. She then taught sixth grade at Morgan County Middle School and was the girls’ basketball coach for many years. Mrs. Herndon was married to the late Hubert Herndon. She was a member of Rutledge United Methodist Church, where she served as long as she was able.
Mrs. Herndon is survived by her children, Kip Herndon and Susan of Rutledge and Kris Strickland of Madison. She leaves one grandson, Trey Herndon and Christina and two great grandchildren, Emily and Garrett.
The family received friends on Tuesday from 1 – 2 p.m. at Rutledge United Methodist Church. The funeral service was held at 2 p.m.. Interment followed at the Madison City Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Rutledge United Methodist Church or Companion Animal Rescue.
