Congratulations to the 2017 Region Champions Girls’ Tennis Team. It’s been a while since either the boys or girls had captured the trophy and it was well deserved. Hosting the Region 8-AAA Tournament gave the girls some home court advantage as well as fielding a number of seniors who played major roles in the tournament outcome. The number one Lady Dogs will move on to the State Playoffs and play a home match versus Murray County on April 19 at 4 P.M. Should they pull that one out, they would get a second round home match as well for finishing first in region play.
Coach Stacy Dearing was excited when she told us, “Our team truly pulled together and, under pressure, our number one doubles team of Madison Gasque and Caroline Rittenhouse pulled out an amazing third set to win. It feels great!!! I’m honored to coach such an incredible group of young men and women.” The Lady Dogs beat Jackson 3/2 in as close of a match as you could get.
Dearing is in her first year as the head coach of both the boys’ and girls’ teams. She has a championship under her belt in her first season after taking over for Greg Thompson who moved into a leadership role for the school system.
Morgan’s seniors include Chloe Cooper, Carley Henry, and Jessie Pagett. Their starting lineup going into the playoffs will be: number one singles Cooper, number two singles Avery Kirby, number three singles Henry, number one doubles Caroline Rittenhouse and Madison Gasque, and number two doubles Pagett and Sara Moore.
The boys finished third in the Region Tournament and will play Bremen on the road April 18. Their starting lineup includes: At number one singles is freshman Chandler Brady, Noah Harris gets the nod at number two singles and Will Owen fills in the number three singles slot. The number one doubles team consists of Sam Jones and John Cardwell while Owen Anderson and Wylder Everett play at number two doubles. Seniors on this year’s squad are Harris, Owen, and Bryce Edwards.
