Everyone is invited to kick off the summer right with Madison’s new tradition, Free Movie Night in Town Park. This Thursday, July 6, the park will be showing the remake of a classic series: Star Trek. The plot of this award winning film, as described by Google, is the following: “Aboard the USS Enterprise, the most-sophisticated starship ever built, a novice crew embarks on its maiden voyage. Their path takes them on a collision course with Nero (Eric Bana), a Romulan commander whose mission of vengeance threatens all mankind. If humanity would survive, a rebellious young officer named James T. Kirk (Chris Pine) and a coolly logical Vulcan named Spock (Zachary Quinto) must move beyond their rivalry and find a way to defeat Nero before it is too late.”

This year’s movie selection varies from previous years’ more retro vibe.

In fact, the more contemporary aspect of the series is what drove Colleen Hall, mastermind behind Free Movie Night, to choose it. Hall explained that the movies are family friendly, but she also hopes that this year’s choice of film will reel in some younger people.

Star Trek will be the first to be shown on July 6, followed by Star Trek into Darkness on July 13, and finally Star Trek Beyond on July 20. Each night round 8 p.m., there will be different musicians coming to perform before the showing of the movie. The first movie night will feature music from Carrie Bowen, a musician out of Monroe. As for the other movie nights, those artists have not been specified yet but will be announced closer to date.

Not only will the park have music, but great food too. What’s a movie without popcorn? The citizens of Madison may never know because the event will have popcorn and drinks. Although, movie comers are welcome to bring their own beverages in coolers so long as they are not in glass bottles. There will also be a concession stand headed by the Morgan County High School Robotics Team. All of the proceeds from the stand will go to the club’s upcoming season.

Everyone is invited to Free Movie Night; in fact, the citizens of Morgan County are encouraged to come, as it supports the local Robotics Team and the community!
