A 49–year–old Rutledge man died Sunday night after the truck he was driving on Brownwood Road left the road and overturned.

According to Georgia State Patrol reports, Richard Lowell Messer was pronounced dead at the scene by Morgan County Coroner Adam Carter after the 2015 Ford F 150 pickup truck Messer was driving left the right shoulder of the road and, eventually completely left the road. The truck began to spin, struck a culvert, overturned and struck a decorative wagon wheel and wooden support posts in a residence lot off Brownwood Road.

The truck then struck two trees and continued to overturn. At some point, reports state, Messer was ejected from the vehicle and was located in front of the truck by emergency workers. Reports state he was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the wreck.

Limbs from the tree struck by the truck also struck a second vehicle parked in the driveway of the crash site. The incident occurred near the 5000 block of Brownwood Road at approximately 8:30 p.m.

Reports state that alcohol is suspected to be involved in the crash. A witness told the investigating trooper that Messer had arrived at her West Road, Rutledge residence allegedly intoxicated. The witness said when she attempted to get the truck keys from Messer he “sped away” from the residence.
