Volleyball action this past week saw the girls come up short on Tuesday against Athens Academy and Madison County only to rebound with two big wins on Thursday. The Lady Dogs got a revenge win over Madison County on the Lady Raiders’ home court before besting a strong East Hall squad in the tri-match.
Coach Greg Thompson discussed the week’s games. “I was disappointed in the way we played Tuesday against two quality opponents. We came out in the first set of each match playing well, but just made too many costly mistakes. You can’t get away with that against teams like Madison County and Athens Academy. Our passes still have to be more consistent and we have to block better up front to take some of the pressure off our back row on defense.
Thursday we had a great night playing in Madison County and taking on East Hall well. They are two really good teams and to come away with two wins was really big for us. I thought it was our best performance of the year. We passed the ball very well, ran our offense and avoided costly service errors. I think we built some good momentum to take us into our first area match on Tuesday.” That match will be a doubleheader (JV and varsity) played against East Jackson on the road. In the first game of the week, Morgan fell to Madison County 25-22 and 25-15 in straight sets. Morgan started strong in the first set on the service game of Bailey Shultz and Madison Gasque to take an early 8-3 lead. Natalie Baddour, Brooke Butler, and Aris Hubbard were dominating at the net in the opening moments. The Lady Red Raiders turned the tide with a four-point run to move things closer at 8-7. Morgan took a 12-8 lead off serves by Katy Hill and Anna Cox only to watch Madison County move to within one point at 12-11. That was enough for Thompson as he called a timeout to get his troops settled. However, the visitors made a run with the scored tied at 14-all and found themselves with a four point lead at 18-14. Morgan wasn’t finished. Hill and Gasque again showed off their service skills and tied the game at 22-22 before the Lady Raiders rattled off three straight points to take the first set 25-22.
The second set was all Madison County as they jumped out to a 6-0 lead out of the gate and lengthened that lead to 14-2 before Morgan woke up. The lead was cut to 14-8 on Hill’s serve, but that was as close as the team would get. The final was 25-15 and the match.
The remainder of the scores for the week had Morgan falling to Athens Academy 25-17 and 25-13 Tuesday. The spikers got wins over Madison County 25-23 and 25-16 in the opener Thursday before taking out East Hall in three sets. The scores showed Morgan 25-21 in the first set, East Hall 30-28 in the second, and Morgan 25-11 in the third set tiebreaker.
