Competing against the biggest field they have faced this season, the Morgan County High School wrestling squad got some big finishes against a strong field out of Zach Smith and Donovan McElligott. The productivity of these two tournament champions in their respective weight classes gave the Dogs enough points to finish fourth out of 32 teams despite missing five starters.
Morgan’s Smith came through to wrestle to his first tournament championship while McElligott continues to dominate the opposition. McElligott has won every tournament he has entered in his weight class and doesn’t seem to be slowing down. Griffin McAlister took second to help lead the team to the podium. Three other wrestlers finished fourth in their weight classification. They were Mason Adams, Hayden Snowden, and Finn Williams. Coach Dusty Sidwell said, “We had a great turnout for the King of the Mountain Tournament. With several of our starters missing and to finish fourth in this size event, I could not be more excited. What a weekend it was for our team!”
Coming up for Morgan this week will be a home competition Wednesday, Dec. 6 with Monroe Area and Oglethorpe County coming to town. That event will start at 5p.m. with Varsity, JV and Morgan County Middle School slated for action that day. The weekend has the Mat Dogs hosting their annual Morgan County Christmas Classic both Friday and Saturday. Action will begin at 5p.m. Friday and resume Saturday morning. The match will feature both JV and Varsity brackets.
In Morgan County Middle School wrestling news, the Bullpups have begun their season with two matches over the past week. According to Coach Marcus Crowe, the team had a good showing at the Ola Tournament. Will Furr placed third in the A Bracket while Jamarion Clark placed first in the B Bracket. Miles Butler also placed by finishing second in the B Bracket. Crowe remarked, “All our wrestlers had a good tournament and learned a lot.”
