Julius Porter Astin, of Rutledge, passed away February 12, 2018. He was born in Rutledge to the late Charles Walter Astin and Lizzie Nell Colston Astin. Mr. Astin worked many years in construction where he was involved in the Georgia Power Dam, Madison Health and Rehab as well as the home of Vince Dooley. He also owned a service station in Rutledge for several years. He was a member of the Dewald Masonic Lodge, and the VFW. Mr. Astin was a recipient of two Purple Hearts, a Bronze Star for having served in the 4th Infantry at Utah Beach on D-Day. He was a member of Rutledge Baptist Church.
Mr. Astin is survived by his children, Tim Astin and Celia and Wanda Rowe. His grandchildren include Melanie Rowe Winstead and Curtis and Melissa Astin Reid and Ryan. Great Grandchildren include Liam Reid, Colin Reid, Zip Winstead and Cy Winstead. Mr. Astin was preceded in death by his wife Doris Beatrice Spinks Astin and a son-in-law, Gene Rowe.
Services will be held for Mr. Astin on Thursday, February 15 at Rutledge Baptist Church. Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. and funeral service at 2 p.m. Interment will follow at Stapp Cemetery Rutledge.
