Junior Cat Usry scored both goals for Morgan County’s girls’ soccer team, but it wasn’t enough against a potent Walnut Grove offense. With the loss the squad moved to 2-2 on the young season. Coach Anne Stamps only has two seniors on the roster, and one of them, Morgan Walker, is still playing basketball. The other is Mackenzi Barrett. The young team features 10 players in either the ninth or tenth grade so this squad will only get better with experience.
Usry showed her offensive potential right off the bat with a shot that just missed to the right side. After that, the Lady Warriors began to test Morgan’s goal keeping skills.
They scored goals at 32:02 on an unlucky bounce where the ball rebounded off a Morgan player into the net, at 27:20 on a long shot from the right side, and again at 24:34 on a free kick that was just over the head of Lilly Hernandez.
The flurry of goals came quickly and put the Lady Dogs in an early hole that was nearly impossible to dig out of.
Morgan fought hard but lost the battle for field position for most of the first half. The opportunities that did come their way fell just wide or were saved by Walnut Grove’s goal keeper. Brooke Randall and Usry were responsible for most of the decent shots Morgan was able to get off in the first half.
It was 3-0 at the half, but it could easily have been 1-0 had it not been for some bad breaks around the net.
Morgan showed some better offense and defense in the final 40 minutes along with a little grit as they played their 8-AAAAA opponent to a 2-2 tie. Freshman Mckenzie Larate came on in relief at goal keeper and played well making several nice saves throughout the half.
Morgan made a couple of nice shots on goal early that just missed the net, but finally connected for one at the 26:58 mark when Usry scored the first of her two goals.
This closed the gap to 3-1 and gave Morgan some new pep in their stride. However, it didn’t take long for the Lady Warriors to strike back with one of their own at 22:10 to go back ahead by three goals 4-1.
Larate kept another goal from scoring on a great save just a minute later to keep Morgan in the hunt. Walnut Grove made a number of shots that missed before Usry scored her second on a penalty kick that made it 4-2. A final goal was scored with only 2:45 remaining by the Grove, but it didn’t matter much in the end. Final score 5-2 WG.
The Lady Dogs have since played two matches against Hart and Madison County. Results were not available at press time.
Morgan will play Eastside in Covington February 27 at 5:30 in their next outing.
