Ty Manning, an art teacher at Morgan County High School, is showing off his own artwork that is currently on display in Athens. Hendershots, a trendy coffee bar in Athens, is holding a reception this Saturday, March 31 at 7 p.m. in honor of Manning.

The art show will not only feature Manning’s art on display, but music from three different bands, including a band Manning himself plays in: The Slawdog Biscuits. Manning describes his music as “country with a rock and roll attitude.”

The collection of art featured in this Saturday’s show pays homage to Manning’s musical heroes. There are 12 painted portraits of famous musicians, including Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Leon Russell, Waylon Jennings, Tom Petty, Elvis, Duane and Greg Allman, Janis Joplin, and Jerry Garcia. Also on display, is a painting of his own home in Buckhead, Ga.

“This is very personal for me,” said Manning. “I love collage and I love music. So, I decided to collage sheet music and do ink wash paintings of my musical heroes.”

Manning is looking forward to showcasing his art and his music this Saturday, hoping the community will come out and support him.

“It’s going to be a lot of fun,” said Manning.  “I hope people will come out and see the art, listen to our music, and just have a good time.”

Manning spends most of his time teaching children how to create art and, for some, time neglected to create art himself.

“I teach art during the day and the last thing I want to do when I get home is do art, so music became my escape from my day job,” said Manning.  “But I am always preaching to kids about how they should do it, so I actually decided to practice what I preach.”

Manning used last Christmas break to create the artwork that is currently on display at Hendershots. Each work is being auctioned off. Five have already been sold. To purchase one of Manning’s pieces through the auction visit: www.32auctions.com/tysart.

“This is the last week!” said Manning. “The auction ends at 7 p.m. March 31. Coincidentally, that’s the exact time of the huge art closing reception on Saturday. Winning bidders can come and pick up their new art and hear our new tunes! I also have 8.5×11 prints of all 13 pieces for sell for $5 each.”

All proceeds from the event will help fund Manning’s latest musical record, entitled “Empty House,” which is slated for release on June 15.

Attendees this Saturday may also be featured in a music video for one of Manning’s singles as the he plans to live record part of the show for the project.

Hendershots is located at 237 Prince Ave, Athens, GA.
