The Morgan County Middle School Spike Dogs are off to a great start for the 2018 season. On August 18 the team competed in the pre-season jamboree for the conference they compete in. All 11 teams participated in the jamboree with superior competition throughout the day of play.
The A squad went 3-0 with wins over Malcom Bridge, George Walton Academy, and Oconee County Middle Schools. Coach Alan Shultz said, “Our girls showed a lot of heart with the Malcom Bridge win, overcoming a 20-10 deficit.”
The B squad went 2-1, with wins over George Walton, and Oconee.
On August 20th, the Spikers played their first regular season match on the road at Madison County.
According to Shultz, the A-squad lost the first set, but came back to win the next two sets to win the overall match. He commented, “We didn’t serve or pass well in the first set, but the girls did a great job of both in the final two sets. This was a very good Madison County team, and a great win to start the season with.”
On August 24, the team traveled to Oglethorpe County to play. This is Oglethorpe’s first season competiting in middle school volleyball, and they were a little overwhelmed with Morgan’s experienced team, as Shultz described it. The A-squad serving dominated the match, and they won convincingly in two sets.
The B-squad grabbed their first regular season win taking both sets from Oglethorpe.
Later in that same week on August 30, the Spike Dogs played their first home match against Prince Avenue Christian Academy. Shultz noted, “Once again, the serving of our A-squad was impressive. Both setters, Addy Christian and Allie Cox, served extremely well. At one point, Cox rattled off 12 straight serves. Outside hitters Presley Hill and Makenzie Pitzer also served well. Hill and Pitzer also played a great match at the net.
Both had several nice kills in each set. The A-squad rolled to a two set victory 25-10, 25-11.” The B-squad also had a great day against Prince, winning both sets.
Morgan’s next home matches will be September 4 against Athens Academy and September 5 against Malcom Bridge. Each match begins at 4:30.
