The Morgan County Bulldogs traveled to Carnesville last Friday night to take on the Franklin County Lions and came home with another big Region 8AAA win.  This one was a total team effort.  Trent Folds led the offensive onslaught with touchdown passes to four different players and the Bulldog defensive unit surrendered just a single touchdown over the first three quarters of play.  Morgan County’s special teams got into the act as well when D.J. Jones blocked a punt for a safety as Morgan bullied their way to a 26-7 halftime lead that grew to 40-7 by the end of the third period.  At that point Coach Bill Malone called off his dogs and Morgan cruised in from there.

Defensive coordinator Brett Bell noted about the game, “This was a great team win.  I’m excited about the improvement that we are making as a team on a weekly basis.  After that error in the first quarter our defense pretty much dominated the game.”  Bell also said, “On the defensive line Chris Walls had an excellent game as did David Williams.  In the secondary Zan Mohone flew around the field and had multiple tackles.  D.J. Jones also came up with a big play (punt block for safety) on the special teams.”

The Bulldogs opened the game with a long punishing drive that was led by the ground game.  They drove 66 yards on 10 plays punctuated by Kobridgette Lumpkin’s 28 yard run but the Dogs also sprinkled in a couple of passes along the way. Trent Folds hooked up with Seth Robertson on a curl route that was good for 14 yards and polished off the march with a fade route to Denver Laughlin.  Laughlin made a beautiful catch in the corner of the end zone for Morgan’s first touchdown of the night and Finn Williams, who was perfect on five extra points, booted his first one and the Bulldogs led 7-0 with 7:31 left in the opening period.

The Lions responded with their lone highlight of the night when they popped a trap up the middle for 79 yards and tied the game at 7-7 but that score didn’t hold up very long.  On the ensuing possession Morgan County got rolling again.  This time they went 68 yards in 10 plays and went ahead when Kobridgette Lumpkin went wide and tallied from eight yards at the 1:45 mark of the first quarter to give the Dogs a 14-7 lead that would not be threatened.  That drive was keyed by a 12 yard pass from Folds to Boone Bruce and two nifty runs from Keirreon Farley that covered 18 and 11 yards.

After an exchange of punts Morgan had Franklin County backed up at the nine yard line, forced a punt and the Bulldog’s special teams got into the act.  D.J. Jones broke through, smothered the punt and the ball rolled out of the end zone to give Morgan County a 16-7 lead.

Franklin County’s free kick was returned to the Bulldog 27 and on the first play Morgan broke their back.  Trent Folds scrambled left and unleashed a perfectly thrown bomb down the middle of the field that Jordan Huff gathered in to complete a 73 yard touchdown pass that made the score 23-7 with 3:52 left in the half.

But the Dog’s weren’t through.

The Morgan County defense forced a punt and the Dogs had one more possession.  Beginning at their 33 and with just 56 seconds left in the second quarter the Dogs went to their two minute drill and executed it flawlessly.  Trent Folds completed curl routes to Boone Bruce and Keirreon Farley to get the Dogs inside Franklin County territory and then he found Seth Robertson on an out route for another 14 yards to the Lion 29 yard line.  Folds then hit Jerritt Wyatt up the sideline for 24 more yards to the five with eight seconds left.  After a throw to the end zone fell incomplete Finn Williams came on the boot a 22 yard field goal as time expired in the half to give Morgan a hefty 26-7 lead at intermission.

The Bulldogs made sure Franklin County could not a comeback by stuffing the Lions on their first possession and then coming up with a clinching score. Starting at the Morgan County 42 the Bulldogs quickly drove 58 yards in seven plays for their fourth touchdown of the night.  The march was highlighted by a quick screen to Seth Robertson that covered 25 yards and by another screen pass to Jordan Huff that covered the final 14 yards for the touchdown.  On that play Huff took the pass, sprinted toward the goal line and bowled over the last defender for six points.  Finn William’s PAT made it 33-7 with 6:02 left in the third quarter and the hay was in the barn.

Morgan added one more score when they put together another long drive.  This one covered 60 yards and was punctuated by several chunk plays. Keirreon Farley darted 18 yards and 16 yards on two carries and Seth Robertson added 14 more as the Dogs reached Franklin’s 12 yard line.  Three plays later Folds found Chris Walls on an RPO, Walls scooted the final eight yards and Williams made it 40-7 with the extra point as the third quarter ended.  Franklin County scored twice in the final quarter after Head Coach Bill Malone began to substitute freely and the final tally was 40-21.

Folds passed for 233 yards in the contest, Jordan Huff led the receiving corps with 96 yards on three catches and the duo of Kobridgette Lumpkin and Keirreon Farley led the ground game with 71 and 64 yards respectively. Morgan outgained Franklin County 433 to 208 on the night.

The Bulldogs host Jefferson this Friday night at Bill Corry Stadium in a game that has major playoff implications.  Game time is 7:30.
