George William Fields, Jr, 93 of Decatur, died September 30, 2018. Mr. Fields was born in Stamford, Conn. on October 7, 1924 to George W. Fields, Sr and Julia Cargile Fields. Mr. Fields was a graduate of Mercer University, where he served as President of the Student Ministry Association. He later received a Master’s of Divinity from Southern Theological Seminary. He pastored for 21 years, serving in Apalachee, Bostwick, Godfrey, Shady Dale, Glennville and Glenwood. He also served in Defoe, Ky. and McDonough. After his service in the ministry, Mr. Fields went to work with the Georgia Department of Community Affairs. He enjoyed golf and hunting. He also loved camping and travelling. He and Mrs. Fields travelled from coast to coast in the U.S. and even camped across Europe.
Mr. Fields is survived by his wife of 72 years, Ora Nelle Shockley Fields. He leaves three children, Lewis Paul Fields, Rebecca Ann Hall and Martin Cargile Fields. Grandchildren are Kimberly McKaughan, Angelina Hall, Arthur Hall, Brandon Hall and Stephen Fields. Great grandchildren are Chloe, Haley, Caleb and Jacob.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, October 13 at 10 a.m. at Apalachee United Methodist Church. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Interment will follow at the Apalachee Cemetery. A reception will follow the graveside service at the Apalachee Schoolhouse.
