Morgan County bowed out of the state playoffs with a 40-7 loss to a very solid Lovett squad who dominated the game from start to finish.  The Lions rushed for 310 yards and passed for 203 more while holding the Bulldogs to just 91 total yards on the night. Lovett junior quarterback Blaine McAllister burned Morgan for 93 rushing yards and 203 through the air while accounting for three touchdowns.  Morgan had no answer for the tough Lovett defense, managing just five first downs on the night and finished their season with a record of 5-6.

On a cool, blustery night on the banks of the Chattahoochee River the Bulldogs just never got anything going.  Lovett led 14-0 after one quarter and 21-0 at halftime then added 19 more points in the second half while Morgan managed just one touchdown.  Morgan County’s score came on a 45 yard pass from Trent Folds to Jordan Huff and cut the lead to 24-7 with 8:01 left in the third quarter but that was as close as Morgan came. Lovett reeled off two more touchdowns and a safety over the final quarter and a half to post the 40-7 win and will move on to the second round of the state playoffs to play Calhoun.

The Bulldogs got off to a positive start.  They punched out two first downs and after Folds completed a 14 yard pass to Huff, Morgan was into Lovett territory at the 41.  On the next play a fumble ruined the drive and Lovett took over on the 45. They drove to the Bulldog 18 but the Morgan defense stiffened and forced a 35 yard field goal that flew wide left with 6:53 left in the opening quarter.

Morgan went three and out and punted to midfield.  From there the Lions wasted little time getting on the board.  They completed a 21 yard pass on first down and four plays later they were in the end zone.  The PAT made it 7-0 with 3:09 left in the first period.  Lovett added another score before the quarter was done.  They covered 49 yards in five plays and made it 14-0 with just eight seconds left in the period.

On the ensuing series Morgan suffered a blocked punt but made up for it when David Williams recovered a fumble at the nine.  The Dogs punched it out to the 33 with a first down and a nifty 12 yard run from Seth Robertson.  A nice punt from Folds rolled dead at the 21 but Lovett quarterback Blaine McAllister bootlegged right on the first play and found Nick Jackson who broke a tackle and went 79 yards to pay dirt.  That extended Lovett’s lead to 21-0 with 8:05 left in the half and that’s the way things stood at intermission.

Lovett added a 21 yard field goal early in the third period to make it 24-0 and Morgan countered with their best offensive series of the night.  Kobridgette Lumpkin squirted wide for nine yards and then burst through the middle for 17 more to the Lion 43.  After a loss of two yards Folds dropped back to pass and found Jordan Huff down the middle on a post route for six points.  Finn Williams was good on the PAT to make it 24-7 at the 8:01 mark of the third quarter but that was all Morgan County could muster on this night.

The Bulldog defense kept fighting and forced Lovett to give the ball up on downs on one series and later created a turnover when Seth Robertson came up with an interception.  Lovett’s offense kept pounding away and wouldn’t be denied.  On next series the Lions broke through on a nine yard run from McAllister to make it 31-7 with 11:04 left in quarter number four.  That touchdown sealed Morgan’s fate but the Lions tacked on one more score on a three yard run and finished off the night with a safety after a Bulldog running back was tackled in the end zone.

Morgan’s offense was led by Trent Folds who completed seven of 19 passes for 90 yards and by Jordan Huff who had three receptions including the touchdown.  Defensively the Bulldogs were led by junior linebacker Cole Freeman who had another big game with seven solo tackles and nine assists.  Junior cornerback Seth Robertson also had a productive game with three tackles, one assist, an interception and a broken up pass.

Morgan County ended their season with an overall record of 5-6 including a 4-2 mark in Region 8AAA.
