The Morgan County High School wrestling squad opened up their season with dual meets at home and on the road at South Forsyth. Playing without a full complement of wrestlers early in the season, the Dogs held their own in both events. First-year Coach Carter Shultz talked about his team’s week, “We wrestled Loganville and Madison County Wednesday night for our first home dual. The first match against Madison County didn’t go our way (60-24). Madison County is loaded this year and will most likely be in the Top 10 in AAAA. We had a quick turnaround and beat Loganville handily in the next match (57-24). Saturday we went up to the War Eagle Duals at South Forsyth and went 3-2 on the day missing four starters from the lineup. Our first match was against Colquitt County, a very tough AAAAAA school and lost 60-22. We met St. Francis next and came out flat in a dual we were very capable of winning (52-36). We ended the day on a 3 match win streak against McEachern (43-42), Northview (60-6), and Southeast Whitfield (56-24).”
“Last week was the busiest week for us so far this season. We started the week on Monday with a match in our Middle School gym against GMC, Athens Christian, and Clark Middle. On Wednesday we faced Madison County at home. Friday we faced Madison County and Stephens County at Madison County. Saturday we had another excellent showing at the Redskin Rumble in Social Circle. This tournament had 16 teams competing and was the toughest challenge the team has faced so far. We placed fifth out of 16 with very small margins between us and the third and fourth place finishers. We had several wrestlers earn individual medals. This coming week we will slow things down a bit and practice once or twice and we will compete on Saturday with the varsity team at the Walnut Grove Duals,” said Middle School Coach Marcus Crowe.
