The City of Rutledge received a 19th Century makeover while Steven Spielberg himself roamed around town while directing a film shooting for an episode of “Amazing Stories,’ a reboot series of his shortlived1980s sci-fi/horror show. Actor Dylan O’Brien, who starred in the Maze Runner trilogy and Teen World, was also spotted performing scenes in Rutledge during the film shoot.

Scenes for Amazing Stories were shot last week in Downtown Rutledge, as well as in parts of Bostwick and Madison.

Filming begin on Monday, Jan 14 off Highway 83 outside of Madison and then moved to Bostwick, behind the Cotton gin on Mayor John Bostwick’s farm. Downtown Rutledge received a full makeover for the filming project to transform the heart of downtown into a 19th century town. Rutledge’s iconic gazebo underwent a paint job for the filming, and on Wednesday, Jan. 16, crews began covering the intersection of Fairplay Road and Main Street with dirt.

Rutledge residents witnessed the cast in their time-period costumes during filming and crew members setting up and cleaning up throughout the weekend. Some caught glimpses of Spielberg snacking local cuisine between takes.

The reboot television series will air on Apple TV, reviving the Spielberg anthology series from the 1980s. Amazing Stories was a short-lived series, but gained a faithful cult following.

Spielberg will serve as a producer on the show, with Once Upon a Time creators Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis signing on to recreate the fantastical series. The new Amazing Stories promises to “transport the audience to worlds of wonder through the lens of today’s most imaginative filmmakers, directors and writers,” stated a press release from the show’s creators.

According to the Wrap, “Amazing Stories” premiered on NBC in September ’85, and it featured horror, sci-fi and fantasy tales directed by legends like Bob Clark, Joe Dante, Martin Scorsese, Tom Holland, Tobe Hooper, and even Spielberg himself. “The series, from Universal TV and Amblin Television, will transport us to worlds of wonder through the lens of today’s most imaginative filmmakers, directors and writers,” said show officials to The Wrap. “Amazing Stories” is executive produced by Steven Spielberg, Darryl Frank, Justin Falvey, Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz.

The first season will feature 10 episodes, with each episode featuring a different cast and plot.

Morgan County is just one of many locations throughout Georgia the series is being filmed. Shooting for the show is taking place in Atlanta, Marietta, Forsyth, Griffin, McDonough, Habersham County and other rural areas.
