The Morgan County Wrestling team will be sending seniors Donovan McElligott, Finn Williams, Mason Adams, and Trevor Craft to the 2019 Sectionals after placing at this weekend’s Area Tournament. The 6-AAA event was hosted by Morgan County Saturday bringing in dozens of wrestlers and several high-powered teams from the area to compete for rights to make the trip to Jefferson and the Traditional Tournament Sectionals.
Coach Carter Shultz said, “I’m proud that these four seniors have punched their ticket to the next round. It’s like the first two rounds of the State before traveling to the Macon Centreplex to compete in the Finals.” The Jefferson Sectionals will be held this weekend Feb. 8-9 with the State Championships in Macon slated for Feb. 14-16. Shultz continued, “These guys will continue to wrestle until they win a State Championship or go 0-2 this weekend.”
McElligott was crowned Area Champion by finishing first at 170 pounds. Williams came in second in the 182 pound class while Adams grabbed third place at 132. Craft made the Sectionals by finishing fourth at 152 pounds.
Hosting the Area Tournament is no small undertaking. It does have its perks though. Wrestling at home keeps the team from having to travel and it does allow the home team to raise always-needed funds. Morgan, according to Shultz, benefited from the event by making some money. “I want to give a big thanks to the Takedown Club for handling everything from concessions to ticket sales to the hospitality room and senior plaques. They do a great job. It allowed me to concentrate on coaching the guys. People like Mike Rhodes, Josh McAlister, Lori Adams, Becky Hicks, Becky McElligott and many others made it a smooth tournament all-around.”
The team honored their five seniors early in the day before the action started. All four placers; McElligott, Williams, Adams, and Craft along with Blake Campbell at 160 pounds were given plaques at the final home meet of their careers. Congratulations guys.
Shultz noted, “We will be practicing today with the entire team to move mats. Tomorrow we will have a few guys to continue practicing for the next two weeks as drill partners or just to get in some extra reps and work, but also to travel with us to the Sectionals and State Tournament. Some of the guys will be moving into spring sports like soccer and track.”
