In a week or two of nothing but rain, rain, rain, the spring outdoor sports have pretty much been put on hold. The Diamond Dogs got in a couple of games earlier last week against Hebron Christian Monday and Eastside Wednesday. Almost every other contest, including Friday’s game at home against Walnut Grove was cancelled.
Last week’s student-athlete of the week, Tristan Stapp, earned that honor for his recent play on the diamond for MOCO. The sophomore was instrumental in the win over Hebron Christian with a second inning two-run homer to give the Dogs an early 3-2 lead after falling behind 2-1. Stapp also came through in the bottom of the eighth with a walk-off hit that scored the winning run in the 5-4 nailbiter to give him three RBI’s for the game.
Starter Hunter Lane pitched well for Morgan striking out five through 4 1/3 innings before giving way to eventual winning pitcher Jacob Anderson who was near perfect over two and two-thirds innings of work. The hard-throwing righty struck out five over that span, giving up no hits and no runs.
At the plate for Morgan, Stapp and Maddux Smith both collected two hits on the evening. Catcher Blake Silvey got an RBI single on a 2-2 count in the top of the fifth and shortstop Ethan Stamps also drove in a run in the victory. On the base paths it was Ferguson with two swipes and single steals by Dominic Arienzo and Seth Robertson. The Dogs committed two errors in the game.
