Well over 100 furry creature lovers packed the walls of The Hall on Foster Street to chow down at the Spayghetti Dinner hosted by the Humane Society of Morgan County Tuesday night.
The dinner, catered by Da Corrado’s Ristorante in Lake Oconee and sponsored refreshments by Oconee Brewing Company, HSMC Board of Directors Vice President Jim Jones, and HSMC Board of Directors Member Keith Davis, served as a fundraiser for the shelter and brought in approximately $1500.
“On average,” explained Humane Society Director Courtney Bryson, “we need approximately $265 per dog and $140 per cat to get them ready for adoption. Because adoption fees only offset a small portion of this, fundraisers like the Spayghetti Dinner are so important to providing the care the animals need and help us save more cats and dogs.”
The averaged care cost for the animals cover several canine-specific vaccines and testing, extensive feline-specific testing and vaccines, microchip implantation, reproductive surgeries, food and care. These costs are particular to adult animals; higher amounts are needed to cover needs of kittens and puppies.
Since January, HSMC has had almost 100 animals adopted and are currently housing 50-75 animals at the shelter, most of them being rescues from other local animal control facilities at risk of euthanasia. With money raised from the community, HSMC is able to care for them beyond rescue by having them fully vetted and housing them comfortably while waiting for their perfect families.
“There are a lot of great ways to help the Humane Society,” Bryson said. “We have ongoing needs for donations like cat litter, laundry detergent, Dawn soap, and bleach. We could also always use volunteers for everything from cleaning kennels, playing with animals, doing laundry and answering phones! Monetary donations are always greatly appreciated…We really need the support of our community to keep helping the animals. We have a full calendar of events coming up which are a great way to support the Humane Society.”
