The boys’ golf team took second place in the Area/Region Tournament this week at Highland Walk Golf Course in Royston. The Dogs were only one of three teams out of the 13 participants that qualified for the State Tournament scheduled for May 20-21 at Cateechee Golf Club in Hartwell.
The team shot a score of 329. A team must shoot a 340 or lower and place in the top five to qualify for a spot in the State Tournament.
Leading the scoring for Morgan were Landon Breedlove-75, Bailey Smith-77, Noah Brown-86, Barrett Adams-91, Jared Sanders-92, and Josh Telveski-99.
Coach Josh Reeves talked about his team’s success, “Landon had a great day. He played with a lot of composure, made some good birdies, and even better pars at times. He really grinded out an all-time low round for him to lead his team. Bailey did great to shoot a 77. He would be the first to admit he didn›t have his A Game but he made great swings when it mattered and closed the day with a birdie on the last hole. I was really proud of Noah Brown for shooting his 86. He didn’t make as many putts as he wanted but hit the ball extremely well. It was a big day for Barrett Adams as well. It was nice to see him step up as a freshman and have his score counted.”
Pam Hooten’s girls’ squad competed in their event at Chestatee Golf Club in Dawsonville and finished third with a score of 282. She commented, “The last time the girls made it to the State Tournament was 22014. I am so proud of these girls for all that they have done this year. We have one more big tournament-State!”
According to Hooten, North Hall won the event with a team score of 250 while Hart took second by only one shot at 281. Madison Walley shot a 78, a personal best round that was the runner-up low medalist behind a 71. Hooten elaborated, “It was quite an accomplishment for her to shoot that score at Chestatee. It is a very tough course.” Paige Carroll, Haylee Patterson, and Maitlin Stapp rounded out the top four Morgan scores with identical 102’s.
The girls will now participate at Arrowhead Point in Elberton on May 20-21 in the 36-hole event.
