Armed men burst through an unlocked back door at Happy China Resaturant, Eatonton Highway, Monday night and beat and whipped elderly employees before forcing four customers to the ground during a robbery.
According to Sgt. Jeremy Hoffman, Madison Police Department, the two men entered the restaurant sometime before 9:40 p.m. and struck a 90-year-old man on the head with the pistol.
They then threw a woman in her 60s to the ground, he said, before striking her with a pistol.
Hoffman said the men were both covered with hoodies, gloves and bandanas. He said one was tall and slender and the other short and stocky.
After the men attacked the woman, they then struggled with an elderly man in a wheelchair at the cash register. The men took an undisclosed amount of cash and forced the four customers in the restaurant to the ground before taking one man’s wallet and cell phone.
Hoffman said the woman was transported to Morgan Medical Center and then rushed to Athens for brain injuries. “Her recovery is not certain at this point,” he said.
The man struck with the pistol was transported to Morgan Medical Center, treated for head injuries and released.
Hoffman said after the robbery the men fled out the back door and the customers fled from the front door. Officers were able to speak to three of the customers but are seeking the fourth, he said.
Hoffman said one of the men attacked told authorities that a month earlier he had been robbed in the driveway of his Stone Mountain residence and one of the men responsible for that robbery sounded similar to one of the men who robbed the Happy China.
Authorities searched the area around the restaurant for the men and possible evidence but were unsuccessful.
