Dewey Hiram Richardson passed away peacefully at his home in Rutledge on July 27, 2019 surrounded by his family. Mr. Richardson, born on July 7, 1933 was 86 years old. His parents were Frank and Lucille Richardson of the Union Community in Rockdale County.
Mr. Richardson graduated from Conyers High School in 1950 and the following year on October 26, 1951 he married Ila Mae Lindsey also of Conyers. The couple had three children, Dewey Alvin Richardson (Laura), Robert Alan Richardson (Sheryl) and Terry Edmond Richardson (Kathy) all of whom live in Morgan County.
Mr. Richardson served his country as an MP in the United States Army in the mid-1950’s and saw duty overseas. Upon his return he became a pipe insulator, a job he worked for two decades. The Richardson family moved from Stockbridge to Rutledge in 1964 where they made their home for the past 54 years. In 1970 Mr. Richardson then took a job as the City Manager for Rutledge and served in that capacity for more than 15 years. Later on Mr. Richardson worked for the Lane Conrads Corporation in various capacities.
Mr. Richardson was a faithful, long-time member of Rutledge Methodist Church and was active in their ministries. He was renowned for helping the elderly and incapacitated members of the Rutledge community. He would do any chore that needed to be done in order to help those who were unable to do it themselves.
Mr. Richardson had many hobbies and took particular delight in watching his beloved Atlanta Braves and the Georgia Bulldogs. He was also a gentleman farmer having raised calves, grown hay, and was well-known for his vegetable gardens. Mr. Richardson also took great enjoyment in preparing the family dove field for their annual dove shoot on opening day. That event took place every year for over 30 consecutive seasons and he took great pride in being there with his sons and later his grandsons.
Dewey Richardson is survived by his three sons, six grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. He celebrated his final birthday with that new great- granddaughter in his lap. His grandchildren include Lindsey Richardson, Lucy Brown (Thomas), Brett Richardson, Andi Richardson, Taylor Richardson and Grant Richardson. His great-granddaughter is Hazel Brown. He is also survived by three siblings. Peggy Minter (Gene) of McDonough, Julianne Powell of Stockbridge and Jean Dorcheus (Sam) of Newnan. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ila Richardson and by two siblings, Billy Richardson and Ellen Cox.
The funeral for Dewey Richardson was held at Rutledge Methodist Church on July 29th and burial was in the Rutledge City Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Benevolent Fund at Rutledge Methodist Church.
