Joan M. Alby

Staff Written Obituaries

Joan M. Alby, 87, died peacefully on Friday July 26, 2019 after a long and full life. She was known for being a supportive and dedicated mother and wise and loyal friend. She was elegant and generous, unflappable and gracious.

She was born in Kalamazoo, Michigan and attended Furman University and the Ray Vogue School of Design in Chicago, where she met her husband, Robert D. Alby. They lived in Chicago until 1970, when they moved with their four children to Atlanta.

Joan was an accomplished interior designer, as was her husband. She practiced design as an art form, bringing beauty and joy to innumerable homes and work places. She taught us all that our surroundings matter, and they are an ideal canvas for self-expression, preserving history, and setting the tone for our lives.

Robert and Joan moved to Madison in 1990 and were deeply devoted to the community. Joan was a member of the Magnolia Garden Club for over 25 years, the Chairperson of Acquisitions at Heritage Hall for 20 years, and volunteer at Joseph’s Coat for five years. She was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church in Atlanta from 1970-1990 and a member of St. James Catholic Church in Madison ever after. Her gratitude for the nearly 30 years she spent with the people of Madison cannot be overstated.

Joan is reunited with her husband, Robert D. Alby, and her spirit is carried on by her sister, Glena Vanderberg, her four children, Cathy Stockton, Mary Horner, Greg Alby, and Cynthia Alby, her niece, Jill Vanderberg, and her grandchildren, Glenn Alby, Eleanor Hunt, and Rhett Alby along with many other friends and relatives too numerous to name.

The memorial service will be on Saturday August 3rd at 11 a.m. at St. James Catholic Church in Madison located on 562 Vine Street. A reception will follow.
