The 2019 version of Morgan County volleyball is on a roll with four Region 8-AAA wins this week over East Jackson (2), Hart County, and Monroe Area. MOCO failed to lose a set the entire week! They defeated Monroe 25-13, 25-23, East Jackson 25-15, 25-11, East Jackson 25-15, 25-9, and Hart County 25-18, 30-28 all in straight sets. Those four wins put the Lady Dogs into the 8-AAA lead early in the season. The team is looking to repeat as 8-AAA Area Champions in 2019. Coach Carrie McClain said, “It was a great week for the team, walking away from the week with four Region wins. This team once again showed early season grit by pulling out a win over Hart in the 30-28 second set victory. As I have already shared, it is encouraging to see them pulling out wins like this early in the season where in the past we would have taken it to a third set.”
There were a number of stars for Morgan, according to McClain.
Stand out stats from last week vs. East Jackson:
Emma Silvey: 9 kills and 2 blocks
Brooke Butler: 6 digs, 12 service points
Anna Cox: 20 assists
McKenzie Larate: 8 service points
Presley Hill: 5 digs
Silvey, Cox and Larate: all with 2 stuff blocks each
Butler, Cox and Larate: all with two aces each
Against Monroe Area Emma Silvey set the tone with a nine-point service run. McClain commented, “In the Monroe Area game we were able to mix things up and give all the girls an opportunity to get some court time, especially in the second set. Presley Hill, MaKenzie Pitzer and Reagan McClain had great showings in that set.”
McClain talked about the week with these words, “In preparation for the games last week, we spent a lot of time in practice working on getting our passes on target so that we can stay in system and run our full offense. The girls showed improvement in this area and it allowed for us to run a faster paced offense and provided opportunities for all hitters to attack.”
This week the Lady Dogs will continue to face Region opponents with matches on Tuesday vs. Jackson and Jefferson (at Jackson). Play will begin at 5:00. The squad will return home on Thursday to face Oconee and George Walton. With Jackson and Jefferson on the horizon, it will be interesting to see if Morgan can continue to lead the pack in 8-AAA at 4-0 with Jackson close behind and undefeated at 2-0 according to Max Preps. Jefferson has yet to play a Region match, but you can bet they will be in the hunt as the season progresses.
