Morgan County’s softball squad had an up-and-down week with losses to Region 8-AAA opponents Franklin County and East Jackson before finishing up on the positive side with a win over Monticello Monday.  The girls now sit in fourth place in 8-AAA with Franklin County and Jackson County leading the pack at 9-2 while Jefferson is on their heels at 8-3.  MOCO is now 14-11 overall with a 5-7 record in Region play.

The Region is always one of the toughest in the State.  Last year, Franklin County came in as the number four seed in 8-AAA only to go on to win the State Championship.  They are currently ranked number two only behind Ringgold.  Jackson County comes in at number five and Jefferson in the seventh slot.  Maybe Morgan can duplicate what Franklin did a year ago coming in as the four seed, but anything can happen in the Region Tournament which starts Saturday.  Morgan will host East Jackson in a best-of-three series in the play-in games between four and five.  The winner of that series will automatically be entered into the State Tournament.  The first two games will be played Saturday morning starting at 11:00 am.  The second game will begin around 1:00 or as soon as possible.

Monday the Lady Diamond Dogs took care of the Lady Hurricanes of Monticello by an 8-5 count.  Morgan got two in the first to draw first blood before Monticello got one of their own in the bottom part of the inning.  The Lady Dogs again got things going in the third by tacking on three more runs before the Hurricanes duplicated that amount to make the score 5-4.  MOCO held on by scoring two more runs in the fifth and a single run in the sixth while Monticello could only muster a single score over the last four frames.

The Lady Dogs played one of their best games of the season last week while hosting Franklin County.  The girls put up a valiant effort falling 5-3 before losing later in the week to East Jackson 10-5.  The series this weekend will be a hard-fought one.  East Jackson usually fields a competitive team that doesn’t like to lose.  Get out there and let’s get behind the team.  We need the home field advantage to be just that with a big and noisy crowd.  You don’t want to miss it.  This likely will be the final home games of the season.

This past Tuesday Morgan held their annual Senior Night celebration.  Unfortunately, we didn’t have the details before our deadline.  Look for it next week as the Lady Dogs give a big sendoff to this year’s seniors.
