With only three non-conference game dates remaining on the Morgan County volleyball schedule, the girls have solidified their spot in the Area Tournament with a win over Monroe Area this past week.  The Lady Spikers will go in as the number three seed (8-4) behind number one Jackson County (11-1) and number two Jefferson (11-1).  MOCO will potentially host Monroe Area on Oct 6 with game time to be determined this week.  “If you’re looking at the record, two teams are pretty close to one another.  When I look at my team, I think there are three teams that are pretty close,” commented Coach Olivia Daniell.

Morgan plays at North Hall, at home vs. Eastside, and will end the regular season on the road at Oconee County over the final week.  The Dogs got a bye this past Tuesday and took full advantage of it by traveling to Herman C. Michael Park to play some beach volleyball.  Daniell said, “The bye week helped, but there’s no rest for the weary.  The beach volleyball practice was hard.  After five minutes they were talking about how tired they were and how they couldn’t jump.  It was a good mix of conditioning, team bonding, communication, and fun.”  She joked that the coaches even got in on the action by beating up on the girls in some doubles activity.

In the week’s only two contests, Morgan handled Bethlehem and Monroe pretty handily winning 25-15; 25-19 and 25-22; 25-18 respectively.  “The Monroe Area match was closer than we would have liked, but we do have some nagging injuries that I was trying to protect.  We moved some players around and out of their normal positions some to keep them from making things worse.  The Area Tournament is so close now that we wanted to keep them all healthy,” said Daniell.

The Lady Dogs will need to knock off Monroe Area once again to keep alive their hopes of a repeat Area Championship and another trip to the State Tournament.  2018 saw the Area coaches vote to not have an Area Tournament, but this year they reversed that decision.  The Final Four Area Tournament will be held at Jackson County on Oct 12 with times TBD.
