Morgan County didn’t play their best football game of the season last Friday night when they traveled to Commerce, but eventually posted a wild 45-31 win over East Jackson to move to 4-1 in region play and 7-2 on the season. The Dogs used a crushing ground attack that accounted for 330 yards on the night to eventually subdue a feisty, much improved Eagle squad.

That rushing attack was led by junior Kobridgette Lumpkin who had a monster game.  The junior running back carried the ball 24 times for 226 yards including a 90 yard score in the fourth quarter.  Lumpkin scored three rushing touchdowns on the night but got plenty of help from his teammates.  D.J. Jones had a 75 yard kickoff return for a score, Trent Folds hooked up with Seth Robertson on an eight yard scoring pass and Jonathan Proby had a six yard touchdown.  Robertson also had a two point conversion.  Additionally Key Malone tackled an East Jackson runner in the end zone for a safety and Bennett Ianelli was a perfect 5 for 5 on PAT’s.

Defensively Morgan was led by sophomore linebacker Malone.  In addition to the safety, Malone had two tackles, 11 assists, two tackles for loss, an interception and a broken up pass. Chris Walls, Jamarrion Lewis and Criston Foster also played key roles for the Bulldog defense.

The victory sets up a showdown with the Hart County Bulldogs this coming Friday night at Bill Corry Stadium with the number two and three seeds for Region 8AAA on the line.  The importance of that contest is that the number two seed gets to host in round one.  (For more on that game see the opponent preview).

The Bulldogs got off to a solid start with a 12 play, 59 yard drive that ended when Trent Folds hit Seth Robertson with an eight yard scoring pass.  Ianelli added the PAT for a 7-0 lead with 8:35 left in the opening quarter.

East Jackson responded with a 17 yard TD pass to tie the score but with two seconds left in the first quarter Malone tackled an East Jackson running back in the end zone for a 9-7 lead.

That followed a nice punt by Trent Folds that pinned the Eagles at the five.

After the ensuing free kick Morgan quickly scored again.  Folds hit Seth Robertson on a slant route for 38 yards to the East Jackson 19 and two plays later Kobridgette Lumpkin darted 15 yards to the three yard line.  On the next play Lumpkin scored and Morgan led 16-7 at the 10:41 mark of the second period.

Once again East Jackson came back.  Their fine running back Nino Brown bounced outside and found pay dirt from 25 yards out to make it 16-14 but D.J. Jones got those points back quickly.  Jones gathered in the ensuing kickoff and went 75 yards for a score to make it 23-14.

Late in the half East Jackson came up with an interception and returned it to the Morgan County nine yard line.  The Bulldog defense held but the Eagles booted a 25 yard field goal to make it 23-17 with 2:34 left in the second quarter and that’s the way things stood at intermission.

The Bulldogs forced a punt on East Jackson’s opening possession of the second half and promptly went on a grinding 80 yard drive that took nine plays and resulted in a one yard touchdown run from Lumpkin.  Along the way Seth Robertson found 17 yards on a jet sweep, Lumpkin hit the middle for 23 and Jonathan Proby ran three times for a total of 42 yards.  Seth Robertson scored a two point conversion on a jet sweep to make it 31-17 at the 4:47 mark of the third period.

It looked like the Dogs had gained control at that point but East Jackson wouldn’t go away.  Early in the fourth quarter they scored on a four yard run after they had converted a third and ten on a tipped pass.  That pass wound up falling into an Eagle’s receiver hands and East Jackson took that break and finished off the drive to make it 31-24 with 10:29 left in the game.

Morgan retaliated with a lightning score.  The Dogs were pinned at their 10 yard line facing a third and three when Kobridgette Lumpkin took a handoff, broke through the middle and galloped 90 yards for six points.  After the PAT Morgan led 38-24 with 8:53 remaining but to their credit East Jackson continued to fight back.  A series later they came up with an interception and then hit a screen pass for 38 yards to make it 38-31 at the 6:02 mark to give them hope.

Those hopes were dashed on the next series.  Seth Robertson returned the kickoff to East Jackson’s 42 yard line and the Bulldog offensive unit took it from there.  They ground out those 42 yards on nine plays and scored on a three yard run by Jonathan Proby to make it 45-31 with 2:03 left to settle the issue as Morgan went on to post their seventh win in nine tries on the campaign.

The Morgan County gave versus Hart County is this Friday night at Bill Corry Stadium.  Game time is 7:30.
