A Buckhead man was shot in the arm Monday morning during a car jacking and home invasion. According to Chief Deputy Keith Howard, Morgan County Sheriff’s Office, Raymond McCullough, 72, was shot once in the right forearm around 6:50 a.m. as two masked men approached him for his car keys at his Alford Lane residence. Howard said McCullough was initially transported to Morgan Medical Center, then Athens Regional where he underwent surgery Monday night and, Howard said, was “doing fairly well.”

Howard said the shooting is linked to multiple car thefts and an armed robbery by the same two suspects that began in Williston, S.C.

In fact, he said, one of the men, Terry Jenkins, 21, Willston, S.C. was taken into custody on Monday at approximately 2 p.m. while walking in a neighborhood in Bardwell, S.C. Jenkins faces an armed robbery charge in Morgan County and additional charges in South Carolina and likely charges in Henry County.

At 3 a.m. on Monday a Racetrac convenience store in McDonough, Ga. was robbed by two black males wielding pistols and a 2019 Chevrolet Equinox was stolen from the store parking lot. The men left behind a vehicle that had been reported stolen from Williston, S. C.

At 4:37 a.m. Morgan County Dispatch was notified by OnStar that it had located the Equinox eastbound on Interstate 20 near the 130 mile marker. Howard said as law enforcement officers scrambled to locate the Equinox, OnStar again notified Morgan County Dispatch that the vehicle had been disabled near the 124 mile marker eastbound on Interstate 20.

Officers and investigators responded to the call and, Howard said, began patrolling the Parks Mill Road area when, at 6:45 a.m. Morgan County Dispatch received a call about the shooting. Howard said McCullough told authorities that as he was approaching his white, 1996 Lexus 300 two black men in masks and with weapons approached him and demanded his keys. McCullough struggled with the suspects, Howard said, and was shot before the men took the vehicle. “That car has not been recovered,” he said.

Howard said Morgan County law enforcement worked with Henry County officers to pour over the stolen Equinox. They also contacted the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (S.L.E.D) for assistance.

Howard said both men “hardened criminals.”

“They don’t mind resorting to violence to get what they want.”

On Monday members of the Henry County Sherrif’s Office and Morgan County Crime Scene Technician Ellen Welch were going over the Equinox at the Morgan County Detention Center.

Howard said after officers were alerted that the shooting had taken place authorities were able to determine that the suspects had fled east on Interstate 20 and alerted Augusta authorities and media to “Be On The Lookout” for the men.

The second suspect remains at large, he said, and the Lexus has not been recovered. On Tuesday, members of the Morgan County Sheriff’s Office Investigations Division and a GBI agent were traveling to South Carolina to work with South Carolina law enforcement to locate the second suspect.
