The 2019 Morgan County softball team held their end-of-the year banquet to honor the accomplishments of the individuals and team after another successful season. Several players were recognized for their All-Region performances that included first-teamers Avery Kinnett and Zoey Brown and second-teamers Parker Spain, Hannah Callaway, and Maeson Tanner.
Coach Jason McBay said, “Avery was without a doubt our most explosive hitter at the plate. She led the team in home runs with 5. Around mid-September, no one could get her out. She brings a certain level of confidence to the field every day. Avery is a great teammate that leads by example. She started the year at first base and embraced the challenges of moving to shortstop. I’m really excited to coach Avery for two more seasons. She is a player that I would go to battle with anytime. Zoey hit leadoff or in the two hole for us all year. She understands the offense and all the many intricacies that our offense entails. Many times, Zoey would be hitting behind in the count yet she only struck 3% of the time. At the end of regular season, Zoey had an all-time high batting average of 0.543. Zoey also led the team in stolen bases with 32. Super proud of Zoey. She always has a great demeanor and a love for her teammates. Zoey was also chosen to represent our team at the Georgia Dugout Club All-State All-Star games this coming weekend in Lagrange, GA.”
At this year’s banquet a number of awards were handed out. They included:
MVP – Senior, Zoey Brown
Offensive Player of the Year – Sophomore, Avery Kinnett
Defensive Player of the Year – Freshman, Brianna Lanford
Pitcher of the Year – Senior, Bailey Nix
Golden Spikes – (most stolen bases) – Zoey Brown

Clutch Moment of the Year – Senior, Hannah Callaway for her homerun against Hart County in bottom of the seventh inning on Sept. 11 when Morgan was down 5-4 with one out. They won that game 6-5 in eight innings.
“Most coaches prefer five tool players. I like tools six, seven, and eight. Heart, character, and work ethic,” said McBay.
Heart Award – Senior, Maeson Tanner – for being tough, refusing to quit, playing some of her best ball when she could barely breathe with a pulled muscle against Alcovy (Senior Night) and East Jackson (region playoffs).
Character Award – Sophomore, Emma Garner – For being geniunely happy, a great teammate, prays for others, good student and being the same whether others are watching or not.
