A 17-year-old Union Point teen remains incarcerated Tuesday after he was denied bond in the shooting death of a Madison man last Wednesday.

According to Det. Wes Thompson, Dontearious Burke has been charged with murder and armed robbery after he allegedly shot and killed Kentrell Jones, 23, Madison while Jones was standing on the street on Morgan Circle. Thompson said Burke told authorities that the shooting was part of a robbery attempt that netted $50.

Jones was shot three times with a 9mm pistol, Thompson said, at 8:30 p.m. while he was standing alone next to his vehicle.

Thompson said a 15-year-old Union Point teen approached Jones from the street and Burke allegedly walked up to Jones from behind. “We have video of him walking up and shooting (Jones),” Thompson said.

Jones was transported to Morgan Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

Burke and the 15-year-old jumped into a vehicle and fled the area. Burke was arrested by the Walton County SWAT Team last Friday as the team raided a house on Sixth Street in Monroe. According to a Walton County Sheriff’s Office Facebook post, Burke was found by a Walton County Sheriff’s Office canine unit hiding under a bed in the house. Thompson said the 15-year-old male was also being investigated and may face charges in relation to the shooting.

Thompson said no weapon has been recovered but that Burke has confessed to the shooting. “He ultimately admitted to shooting him during questioning,” he said. The Morgan County Sheriff’s Office issued a Nixel alert naming Burke as a suspect the same night as the shooting. Thompson said the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) was called to investigate the deadly shooting. He also said the Madison Police Department had received assistance from the Greene County Sheriff’s Office, the Greensboro Police Department and the Walton County Sheriff’s Office.
