The Morgan County girls’ basketball team suffered a similar fate to the boys last Friday at Franklin County. After holding a commanding 19-3 lead after the first quarter of play, the Lady Lions dug in defensively for the dramatic comeback.
Despite the early ability to score at will on Franklin, MOCO was only able to find 18 additional points in the final three periods of play losing 38-36 in one they wish they could have back. Both the boys’ and girls’ teams have suffered some down-to-the-wire photo finishes over the course of the 2019-20 season. Most did not turn out in their favor unfortunately.
Coach Timothy Roop’s squad is now 8-10 overall and 4-3 in 8-AAA action. The loss Friday was followed up by a cancellation on the road against Jones County. It has been rescheduled for this coming Saturday, Jan. 18 with JV games starting at one o’clock and varsity games immediately to follow with a 4 p.m. tipoff scheduled for the girls.
This week brings up some huge Region matchups with Hart County coming to town Tuesday (Jan. 14) and a road contest at Jefferson on Friday. Both of those games have major playoff implications for the Lady Dogs. Not much has changed in the Region standings with Morgan playing these two teams this week. Morgan is still holding third place behind Hart County (5-2) and Jefferson (7-0) with the Lady Dragons holding down the third spot this week in AAA behind only Johnson and Pierce County. Game times for the week include a 4:30 p.m. start Tuesday and 4:00 p.m. Friday. These are JV start times with varsity at 6 p.m. Friday.
